Since we don’t get to be present when Mary finally joins her emigré husband Alfyorov in Berlin, we’ll never meet her real self. We won’t learn about how she might have changed over the years – neither will we find out if she still loves Ganin.

We are left in perpetual suspension, and as a consequence, so is Ganin.
